Vendors of cases for Apple’s iPhone 5 were rubbing their hands in glee today, when Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, responded to a customer’s complaint that the back of their new iPhone 5 had scratched by describing it as normal.
In an email obtained by 9 to 5 Mac, Schiller explained ‘Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.’
Numerous tests, including the one in the vide below, have shown that the iPhone 5′s anodised aluminium rear scratches more easily than the glass back on the iPhone 4 and 4S. On the other hand, it’s less likely to shatter when you drop the iPhone.
Nevertheless, Schiller could hardly have given iPhone 5 owners a bigger incentive to buy a case if he’d tried.
