The most widely trailed product launch in recent Apple history reached its conclusion today as Apple announced the iPad mini. The ‘pencil-thin’ mini weighs in at 300g, or the same as a ‘pad of paper’ in Apple parlance.

The mini’s 7.9in screen has a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. It has an Apple A5 system-on-a-chip, FaceTime HD front-facing camera, and five-megapixel iSight camera on the back. The mini has dual channel, 2.4GHz and 5GHz, 802.11n wifi, and the Lightning connector. The cellular version support LTE 4G Band 3, the 1800MHz band used by EE’s new 4G service. Battery life is, said Apple, ten hours.

Prices start at £269 for the 16GB wifi version. There are also 32GB and 64GB versions. The mini will be available to pre-order on Friday. The wifi versions will ship the following Friday, and the cellular versions a few weeks after that.
