Apple has quietly released a new 16GB fifth generation iPod touch. The entry-level model replaces the fourth generation touch which had been available in 16GB and 32GB capacities but has now been withdrawn.

The new model, which costs £199, has lost two of its siblings’ most impressive features, however. It doesn’t have a front-facing iSight camera or the loop carry strap. Those omissions were probably made to keep costs down, but the lack of an iSight camera, which improved significantly between the fourth and fifth generation touches, will give potential buyers pause for thought; for £50 more you can buy a 32GB iPod touch with the loop and a front-facing camera.

The 16GB iPod touch is available now in black or silver from Apple’s online store.
